Our Story
Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).
Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!
Alpaca Breeding Program
At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

After we shear our fuzzy alpaca friends, we turn fleece harvests into one-of-a-kind apparel, home goods, and accessories. Our shearing Super Bowl has come and gone, and it was all hands on deck! 🦙✂️🙌🏼
Thank you to all of our team members and friends who lent their time and expertise to help us with this huge task. Our shearing team traveled from Texas and Upstate New York to help make this a success.
We have about 106 alpacas that we had to shear in a two day window! Our team spends about 6 minutes with each alpaca which includes a full body shear, nail trimming, and teeth cuttings if necessary.
Our alpacas feel so relieved after they lose the weight of their fleece and they look absolutely adorable too. 😉
This is our first time shearing at our new location! Because of that, it was a closed event for only staff, partners, and family. We hope to make it a ticketed event next year for those who would be interested in attending a shearing.

Every year at the end of April, we shear all 100+ of our alpacas. This is an essential part of alpaca care. If alpacas are not sheared annually, their overgrown fleece can add a lot of extra weight to their bodies. This quickly becomes very uncomfortable for the animals. Not to mention, the heat they would endure if their fleece was not removed before the summer months.
In this video, you can see our shearing team hard at work at our Maryland ranch. We inspect all of the fleece from our alpacas to identify any potential oddities in our animals, which you can see in the middle of this video.
Of course, we had to add in a clip of our newly sheared alpacas enjoying the sun on our ranch. We know they are all so happy that we could relieve them from that extra weight and heat! ☀️🥰
