Our Story
Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).
Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!
Alpaca Breeding Program
At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

We are a real working alpaca ranch, producing some of the finest quality fleece around. After we shear our fuzzy alpaca friends, we turn fleece harvests into one-of-a-kind apparel, home goods, and accessories. This week’s Meet the Herd(sire) Monday is more of a re-introduction of our main man, Starshire’s Declan by Wilkinson! ✨
Declan holds an extra special place in our hearts as the very first national banner winner we welcomed to our herd. Many recognize his signature beard from greeting him in person or through his numerous TV appearances including the hit YOLO TX tv show, news segments (in studio and on the farm), and parades throughout Texas and Maryland.
Declan has fathered many of our crias to date with his main super powers being brightness, crimp style, and a signature Declan beard or unique coloring. His laid back and personable character is often passed down to his kiddos, resulting in beautiful and friendly crias that we look forward to showing in the coming seasons. Declan is also an excellent fiber producer; he yields the largest amount of fiber every year for our farm. We love our super star, Declan, and all the amazing babies he has produced for us!

On Saturday, September 6th, we’ll gather under the Corn Moon — a full moon long associated with abundance, gratitude, and harvest. It’s a time to celebrate the fruits of the season and honor the farmers whose work sustains us all. Here at Black Barn, we’ll mark it by reflecting on our own abundance: community, connection, and joy of alpacas!🦙💛
Led by Cher of Cher Yoga, our evening will begin with a wooded trail hike at sunset, pausing to practice gentle standing yoga postures. We’ll end immersed in the calming presence of alpacas, bathing in the moonlight and the supportive energy of community and farm.

Odin’s correct confirmation coupled with is laid back demeanor makes him the perfect addition to our black and grey breeding program. 🖤
