Our Story
Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).
Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!
Alpaca Breeding Program
At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

We are a real working alpaca ranch, producing some of the finest quality fleece around. After we shear our fuzzy alpaca friends, we turn fleece harvests into one-of-a-kind apparel, home goods, and accessories. Shop our collection of alpaca fleece products and some of our favorite Texas finds. There’s nothing as soft and durable as alpaca fleece!

Some of our spring babies were born after shearing day this year—so they just got their very first haircuts yesterday! ✂️🦙
This special trim is called a “cria cut.” Unlike a full-body shear, the cria cut leaves fleece on some areas to keep them cool through the warmer months, while still protecting their more delicate areas as they grow.
And the result? The cutest little bobble-heads you’ve ever seen! 🥹 Their tiny faces look even sweeter now that all that baby fluff is out of the way. Come meet them in person soon—they’re growing fast and getting even more curious by the day!

Dust… baths?! 🦙
If you’ve ever seen one of our alpacas dramatically flop to the ground and roll around like they’re living their best life… they are. That’s a dust bath, and it’s totally normal (and oddly adorable).
So why do alpacas do it?
Dust baths help keep their fleece feeling fresh by soaking up excess oils and moisture and helping to prevent parasites. Plus, it’s a great way to cool off, scratch an itch, and unwind. Think of it as an alpaca version of a spa day… with more dirt and fewer cucumbers.
And yes—they absolutely have favorite spots, and once one alpaca starts rolling, the rest usually join in for the party. It’s a whole vibe. 😎
