Maryland's Premier Alpaca Ranch

Our Story

Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).

Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!

Alpaca Breeding Program

At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

The Shoppe

Summer Spa Day ✨

On hot summer days, our alpacas enjoy a refreshing belly bath followed by one of nature’s best spa treatments—a good dirt bath.

Rolling in the cool, dry earth helps absorb excess moisture and oils, provides itch relief, helps deter pests, and simply feels good.

A little bath, a little roll, and a peaceful moment in the summer sunshine.

Meet Flora’s Son-shine, Vitaly! ☀️

Flora is a beautiful girl who we lovingly call “In Your Face Flora”—mostly because if there’s a snack involved, you can bet she’ll be right there!

But there’s only one thing Flora loves more than snacks, and that’s her handsome son, Vitaly. This true-black boy, sired by our very own New Daddy Paragon’s DaVinci, is growing into quite the independent young man.

But no matter how big he gets or how adventurous he becomes, Vitaly still wants to be right by Mama’s side wherever she goes. There’s just something extra special about a mama-and-son bond.

Want to meet Flora and Vitaly? Book your Black Barn Alpacas experience today 🦙🫶🏼

Did you know alpacas have a split upper lip?👄

Here, Cream Puff is demonstrating that little split called a labial cleft and how each side can move independently.

Think of their lips like two tiny, flexible fingers. They use them to carefully pick and sort their food, grabbing the good stuff while pushing aside dirt, debris, plants they don’t want, or nibbling on things like cool, metal fencing.

It also helps them graze close to the ground without pulling up the roots—and unlike cows, alpacas don’t use their tongues to grab their food.

Who knew those adorable little lips were so talented?
