Our Story
Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).
Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!
Alpaca Breeding Program
At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

When it’s time for a belly bath, Aubergine doesn’t just cool off—she goes all in! While the rest of the herd enjoys a refreshing belly rinse, Aubergine’s favorite part is sticking her entire face into the hose for the ultimate cool-down. Apparently, “slightly damp” just isn’t in her vocabulary. She believes in extreme saturation!

🎉 Happy 7th Birthday to our one and only Big Daddy Declan! 🎉
Please help us wish the happiest of birthdays to our main man, Declan! Today he’s celebrating the best way he knows how—rolling in the grass, enjoying a refreshing bath, taking plenty of birthday naps, and, of course, indulging in lots of carrots!
Declan holds a very special place in our hearts. He was the very first Champion herdsire to join our herd five years ago, and we truly couldn’t imagine Black Barn Alpacas without him. Calm, sweet, independent, and endlessly lovable, he’s been an incredible ambassador for our farm. From appearing on the news and marching in parades to meeting thousands of visitors across Texas and Maryland, Declan has proudly represented Black Barn Alpacas wherever he’s gone.
He’s also given us so many beautiful, champion crias over the years, and we’re beyond grateful for the wonderful legacy he’s creating through his kind, gentle, gorgeous babies.
Today we celebrate you, Declan. Thank you for bringing so much joy to our farm and everyone who meets you. We love you!
