Our Story
Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).
Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!
Alpaca Breeding Program
At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

After we shear our fuzzy alpaca friends, we turn fleece harvests into one-of-a-kind apparel, home goods, and accessories. Introducing: Soap Felting
In this fun activity, we will create useful and giftable felted soaps using beautiful soft alpaca and merino wool. Perfect for Mother’s Day giving or an activity to do with mom! Participants will create their own design for their soaps. Felted soaps are exfoliating, extend the life of the soap, reduce soap residue, and can be repurposed in a variety of ways even after the soap is used up. Wool is naturally antimicrobial so your soap stays fresh. Participants will learn some of the science and properties of alpaca fiber which result in its felting ability. Please be aware in this sudsy activity, you will have direct contact with water, soap with fragrance, and prewashed and dyed sheep wool and alpaca fleece. A variety or color options available to make your soap uniquely you! Class is led by local fiber artist Catherine Clarke.

Last week we hosted our first alpaca yoga class of the season and it was a hit! There`s nothing like practicing yoga in our open spaces with the peaceful energy of our grazing alpaca herd.

This weekend is the FINAL weekend to see our alpacas in all of their floofy glory! In less than one week we will be shearing our 100+ alpacas 🦙
Be sure to schedule your visit this Saturday or Sunday if you want to see the alpacas before their annual haircuts. Once shorn, our alpacas will look like what we endearingly call ‘bobble heads’ or ‘lollipops’ (equally as adorable as with their long locks).
Shearing is very important for sustainable care. Alpaca fleece keeps growing, so after a full year it can be anywhere from 3-7 inches long and weigh between 5-10lbs. With the impending warmer weather, imagine how hot and uncomfortable they would be without shearing!
